PDA Flashcards
What is a PDA?
A failure of the ductus arteriosus between the aorta and the pulmonic artery to close after birth.
If a PDA remains open after birth, what occurs?
This causes oxygenated blood in the aorta that should be going out to the systemic system to drain into the pulmonic artery then to the lungs and o2 blood remains stuck in the right heart circulatory system, instead of out to the body.
If a PDA is not closed by surgery, what can occur?
Eisenmenger syndrome may occur due to the lungs being long-term exposed to the high-pressure of the aorta
What murmur is associated with the PDA?
Continuous murmur(systolic &diastolic)
“machinery sound”
If a large PDA is not corrected what might develop?
- Nothing.
- Pulmonary hypertension.
- Pericardial effusion.
- Eisenmenger syndrome.
Eisenmenger syndrome
A PDA is commonly found in what kind of births?
Premature births
True or false- PDAs are commonly found in adults
False- rare in adults
A PDA puts the patient at an increased risk for?
Endocarditis
A PDA is a ___ to ___ shunt unless they have ____
L-R shunt ; PHTN
With a PDA on echo- you may see?
Left side enlargement due to the excess volume going back into the lungs then to the left side of the heart
A PDA may show super sternal or PSAX pulmonary artery _____
Trifurcation
When you Doppler with a PDA, what will you see?
Diastolic continuous flow
