This Subpart prescribes the requirements for issuance of an Aviation Maintenance Technician (AMT) license and associated ratings the conditions under which this license and ratings are necessary and the general operating rules and limitations of the holder of this license and ratings
2.6.2 Aviation Maintenance Technician (AMT)
2.6.2.1 Applicability
Eligibility Requirements of AMT
(a) An applicant for an AMT license and any associated rating shall
(1) Be at least 18 years of age
(2) Demonstrate the ability to read, write, speak, and understand the English
language by reading and explaining appropriate maintenance publications
and by writing defect and repair statements;
(3) Comply with the knowledge, experience, and competency requirements
prescribed for the license and rating sought
(4) Pass all of the prescribed tests for the license and rating sought, within a
period of 24 months.
(b) A licensed AMT who applies for an additional rating must meet the
requirements of Subpart 2.6.2.6 and, within a period of 24 months

Air Law and Airworthiness, Natural Science and Aircraft Knowledge, Aircraft Engineering, Aircraft Maintenance, Human Performance
Regulations for AMT license holders, certification, and aircraft maintenance organization procedures
Air Law and Airworthiness
Basic math, physics, and chemistry principles applied to aircraft maintenance.
Natural Science and Aircraft Knowledge
Aircraft materials, structures, systems (powerplants, control, navigation, communication), and fastening techniques.
Aircraft Engineering
Tasks for maintaining airworthiness, including overhaul, repair, and defect rectification per Maintenance Manuals and airworthiness standards.
