What is the prescribers bag
List of medications eligible to prescribers for immediate administration or emergency use
When can the prescribers bag be used?
It can only be used in emergency situations and NOT in routine or planned consultations
- Situations it can be used it
A) Practitioner is called out after hours to see a sick child, suspected to have meningitis, patient can be given BENZYpenicillin can be given
B) Doctor to a house call for a patient who has been vomiting, can give metaclopromide
C) child is rushed to medical centre after becoming unwell at a picnic due to anaphylaxisis and administers adrenaline
Who is eligible for the prescribers bag.
Doctors, dentist, nurse practitioners not intern doctors
How do you order and get access to prescribers bag order book
Via the services Australia by filling out an order form
Prescribers bag book contains 2 years worth or order forms pre- printed with a month and year and can only be supplied by the pharmacy during that month and year AKA- ONE supply during the month
LOST or stolen- must report to police
What is the cost of the prescribers bag
-eligible prescribers are entitled to receive items on the list for free at no cost including brand price premiums and can’t charge a patient for use
- Approved suppliers ( pharmacies) are reimbursed the full pbs amount for supplying the items including brand price premiums
What are the requirements for prescribers bag
- Order on the order form valid for the month and the year, one order from per month.
- The form must be completed in triplicate( original and duplicate copies must be submitted to the pharmacy)
- Some supplies are exclusive ie haloperidol and chlorpromazine can’t be ordered in the same month
4.If the prescriber specifies a specific brand and it isn’t available call prescriber to offer another listed brand and annotate on the form
5.You can order items provide you don’t have it on hand
What are the Dispensing requirements for prescribers bags
- Orders must be dispensed in the month and year printed
- Pharmacy approval number and name of pharmacist dispensing must be on the sticker or order form
- Prescriber or authorised personelle collecting items must sign and date order form
- Pharmacy’s can’t act on behalf of the prescriber and sign off/ date on the order form
- Prescribers details must be on order form and must sign the form
- Supply, form and strength to be supplied must be annotated by prescriber and pharmacist to annotate how much they supplied
