Principles of PBM
- optimise red cells mass
- minimise blood loss
- optimise tolerance of anaemia
Optimise red cells mass
optimise the patients ability to produce their own blood cells.
Includes detection, investigation and management of anaemia, iron deficiency and other haematinic deficiencies
Minimise blood loss
limit or prevent blood loss wherever possible including reducing iatrogenic (relating to illness caused by medical examination or treatment) blood loss.
Optimise tolerance of anaemia
Includes supportive care such as oxygen therapy and fluid management and evidenced based use of transfusion.
PBM is not an alternative to blood transfusion but rather
good clinical practise
holistic utilising a range of strategies tailored to the patients specific situation, communication and team work.
