What to check before ordering blood
A
there is adequate staff to administer and monitor the patient
informed consent has been gained and documented
the process of administration has been explained to the patient including symptoms of possible reactions
intravenous access has been checked and is patent
baseline observations (TPR, BP) have been taken and recorded, including any pre-existing rashes
any premedications required have been administered in time to be effective
resuscitation equipment (including oxygen and adrenaline (epinephrine)) is available and in working order.
