pavlov (1972) Flashcards
what was the aim of the study?
to study how the cerebral cortex works in making associations and to look for a mechanism linking reflexes to cerebral cortex
what was the procedure?
-dog was restrained in a harness in a cubicle and isolated from all distractions.
-an experimenter observed the dog through a one-way mirror and by remote control, presented the dog with food.
-a tube carried the saliva from the dogs mouth to a glass tube where it was measured
what was the reason for the chamber/procedure room?
used to help isolate variables that the dog would have as a stimuli
what type of conditioning did Pavlov use?
-forward conditioning
-he carried out a procedure to show that the conditioned stimulus must come before the unconditioned stimulus
-he did this by showing that an electric buzzer 5-10 seconds before meat did not achieve salivation
-but the elctric buzzer appearing with or just slightly before the meat did produce salivation
what did Pavlov initially want to study?
how the cerebral cortex works
after how many seconds was saliva produced?
9 seconds, by 45 seconds 11 drops had been collected.
what did Pavlov find?
dogs had to be alert and have no other stimuli present
what happened when the buzzer came after the meat?
no salivation
what does Pavlov conclude about signilisation?
-its signilisation in the brain that links the metronome to the food
-signilisation is needed for an organism to survive
- he could repeat the study and have the same findings
-external stimuli present could disrupt the conditioning process
