Paul Newson Flashcards
Mojo
Ex: Before New Year I had lost my mojo because I was mentally drained. But after a nice 10-day rest, I found my mojo and I’m raring to go! Bring it on, people!
A quality when you feel successful and energetic
Raring to go
Ex: After a good rest over New Year, I am now raring to go!
Eager to start
Bring it on!
Ex: 10 new CPE classes with 1000 students in each?! Bring it on!
I’ll do anything you challenge me with
Gagging for smth
Ex:
- I’m so thirsty! I’m gagging for a cold beer!
- 2019 has started and I’m gagging for a challenge
Want smth very much (usually a drink, but we can use it informally in other contexts)
Firing on all cylinders
Ex: I have had 10 days rest and now I’m firing on all cylinders! Give me work! More work!
Operating at the greatest level (this comes from when a car is functioning well, but we can use it in an abstract sense)
I prefer to under promise and over deliver
Мне нравится превосходить ожидания
That ship has sailed
An opportunity is already lost
Ex: We are good friends but I don’t think we’ll be anything more to each other - that ship has sailed
I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it
To avoid creating difficulties for oneself before it is necessary
Ex:
- Where will we stop tonight?
- At the next town.
- What if all the hotels are full?
- Let’s cross that bridge when we come to it
You shouldn’t just jump on the bandwagon
To join or follow something once it is successful or popular
Ex: I can’t stand these people who just jump on the bandwagon after a win.
You drive me round the bend
To make someone angry or tired
Ex: A week on vacation with my relatives is enough to drive me around the bend
You threw me under the bus
To assign blame or responsibility to another person
Ex: Their manager never hesitates to throw an underling under the bus when something goes wrong in the office
Keep it down!
Ex: Why won’t the neighbors keep it down? Five times an hour!
Тише!
Сохранять тишину
Pipe down!
(slightly politer form of shut up)
Ex: Oh for heaven’s sake! Would you just pipe down for a minute?
Замолчать, заткнуться
Settle down
Ex: Come on kids! Settle down and get your books out!
Успокоиться
Give it a rest!
Ex: You two at the back - come on, give it a rest!
Замолчать
