Patterns Of Evolution Flashcards
Mass extinctions
Events during which many species become extinct over a relatively short period of time which allows surviving organisms to evolve
Adaptive radiation
A single species or a small group of species has evolved through natural selection and other processes into several different form that live in different ways
Convergent evolution
Unrelated organisms come to resemble one another
Analogous structure
Same in function but not in structure shoes no sign of evolution
Divergent evolution
Species that resembled the ancestral species but has become more and more distant
Occurs when species begin to adapt to different environmental conditions
Supported by homologous structures
Coevolution
Two species evolve in response to change in each other over time
Punctuated equillibrium
Patterns long, stable periods interrupted by brief periods of more rapid change
Gradualism
Darwin wanted it to be slow and steady
Macroevolutionary patterns
Large scale evolutionary patterns and processes that occur over long periods of time
