Patterns: Normal Sleep Flashcards
Stage N1 =
drowsiness
what will you see during stage N1 sleep?
- alpha attenuation
- slow rolling eye movements
- POSTS
- vertex sharp waves
4-5 Hz
<50 uV
bilaterally synchronous
rarely seen before age 5
POSTS
10-150uV
spontaneous
best seen in transverse montage
maximal at Cz
vertex sharp waves
what is seen in stage II sleep?
- sleep spindles
- k-complexes
12-15 Hz centrally
10-12 Hz frontally
<50 uV
plays a roll in memory consolidation
sleep spindles
frontal dominant
sleep spindles can ride on these
senses are beginning to block outside stimuli
K-complexes
what is seen in stage III sleep?
delta sleep
slow wave sleep with 75uV in amplitude
restorative sleep for the body
difficult to wake out of and causes grogginess
delta sleep
what is usually seen with REM sleep?
saw tooth waves
bursts of slower activity over the midline, with a spread that decreases in both directions
2-6 Hz
saw-tooth waves
how many minutes does REM occur after sleep onset?
90 minutes
early REM onset suggests narcolepsy, sleep deprivation, or inconsistent sleep schedule
narcolepsy
active mind, paralyzed body
paradoxical sleep
- bursts of rhythmic activity in theta range
- mid-temporal maximal location
- seen in drowsiness
- adolescents and young adults
