Chon Ji

Literally means “Heaven and Earth” - interpreted as creation of world, therefore first pattern. Refers to Lake Chon, where Heaven and Earth are said to meet and where the Son of the Lord of Heaven descended to Earth.

Dan Gun
21 Movements
Named after the Holy Dan Gun. In 2333 BC, the son of the God Hwanin sent his son Hwang-Ung to Earth. A bear and a tiger asked Hwang-Ung to be turned into humans. Told to eat 20 garlic cloves, mugworts, 100 days cave. Tiger 29 days. Bear beautiful woman Ung-Yo. Son Dan Gun, founded Go-Joseon

Korean Patriot Ahn Chang Ho (1876-1938), devoted his life to the further education of Koreans. Founded several schools, toured lecturing, led exile group. Emigrated to Hawaii 1902, called himself “Island Mountain” to symbolise standing tall in the face of turmoil in Korea
Won Hyo

Pseudonym of Sol Sedang, monk who introduced Buddhism to Silla before his death in 686AD. Name synonym of his nickname Sedak (Dawn). In 661AD developed Chongto-Gyo (Pure Land) sect. More accessible to lower classes bc no Chinese study

Pseudonym of Korean Confucian Scholar Yi I (1536-1584). Name means Valley of Chestnuts. Finished lessons on Confucian Classics by age 7, passed civil service exams 13. Higher exams 29, full marks. Revered during his life as the Greatest Teacher in the East

Self-exile Manchuria after 1905 Protectorate Treaty, formed a 300men guerrilla. Led several raids. After Japan giving Korean land to China, assassinated first Governor-General Hirobumi Ito 26th Oct 1909. During imprisonment, spirit never broke despite torture.

37 - birthplace on 37°N
Pseudonym of Korean scholar Yi Hwang (1501-1570). Means Retreating Stream. Studied since youth, passing exams at 33 top honours. Took part in purges of corrupt officials. Began building Tosan Sowon, academy that opened after his death and still open today.

Posthumous title of Admiral Yi Soon Sin (1545-1598) of Yi Dynasty. Means Loyalty and Chivalry. Invented Kobukson, armoured battleship, precursor submarine. Renowned leader, but sacked after defying dumb orders. Left hand strike - regrettable death, forced to be loyal

King Kwang Gae Toh Wang, 19th Koguryo King. Expanded S to Han River (Seoul) and N into Manchuria. Aided Silla when it was attacked by Japan.

Pseudonym of Loyal poet Chong Mong Chu (1337-1388). Opposed growing power of General Yi Sung Gae, but seen as an obstacle and murdered. “I would not serve a second master though I might be crucified a hundred times”

Named after great General Ge Baek of Baekje. In 660, organised 5k soldiers to defend against Silla and Tang. Killed wife and family to prevent them falling into enemy hands. Defeated :(. Diagram symbolises strict military discipline

Pseudonym of Song Byong Hi, leader of independence movement 1st March 1919, Declaration of Independence read in Seoul, Japanese retribution.

Pseudonym of General Kim Duk Ryang of Yi Dynasty. Reputation grew following defeating Japanese. Regarded jealously by court, falsely imprisoned and executed. Posthumously absolved of dishonour.
