Q

Why are there 24 patterns?

A

Major General Choi Hong Hi compared the life of a man with a day in the life of the earth, and believed that some people should strive to bequeath a good spiritual legacy to coming generations, and in doing so gain immortality. Therefore, if we can leave something behind for the welfare of mankind, maybe it will be the most important thing to happen in our lives.

Q

Why do we kihap?

A

Correct breath control will not only improve one’s stamina and speed, but will also focus the power of a technique. A sharp exhaling of breath during movement, with a sudden stop on impact of technique tenses the abdomen and maximises power and effort of delivery.

Q

Choong Moo

A

Choong Moo is named after the great Admiral Yi Soon-Sin of the Yi Dynasty. Yi reputedly invented the first armoured battleship, The Kobukson (meaning Turtle Ship) in 1592 which is a precursor to the present day submarine. The reason this pattern ends with a left handed attack is to symbolise his regrettable death having no chance to show his unrestrained potentiality checked by the forced reservation of his loyalty to the king.
