Chon-Ji
Chon-Ji means “the Heaven the Earth”, meaning the creation of the world or the beginning of human history. The pattern has 2 similar parts; one to represent the Heaven and the other the Earth. (19)
Dan-Gun
Dan-Gun is named after the holy Dan-Gun, the legendary founder of Korea in the year of 2333 BC. (21)
Do-San
Do-San is the pseudonym of the patriot Ahn Chang-Ho (1876-1938), who devoted his life to furthering the education of Korea and its independence movement. (24)
Won-Hyo
Won-Hyo was the noted monk who introduced Buddhism to the Silla Dynasty in the year of 686 AD. (28)
Yul-Gok
Yul-Gok is the pseudonym of a great philosopher and scholar Yi I (1536 - 1584) nicknamed the “confucius of Korea”. The 38 movements of this pattern refer to his birthplace on 38 degrees latitude and the diagram represents “scholar”. (38)
Joong-Gun
Joong-Gun is named after the patriot Ahn Joong-Gun who assassinated Hiro-Bumi Ito, the first Japanese governor-general of Korea, known as the man who played the leading part in the Korea-Japan merger. There are 32 movements in this pattern to represent Mr Ahn’s age when he was executed in a Lui-Shung prison (1910). (32)
Toi-Gye
Toi-Gye is the pen name of the noted scholar Yi Hwang (16th century), an authority on neo Confucianism. The 37 movements of the pattern refer to his birthplace on 37 degrees latitude, the diagram represents “scholar”. (37)
Hwa-Rang
Hwa-Rang is named after the Hwa-Rang youth group, which originated in the Silla Dynasty about 600 AD. This group originally became the actual driving force for the unification of the three Kingdoms of Korea. The 29 movements refer to the 29th Infantry Division, where Tae Kwon-Do developed into maturity. (29)
What is a pattern?
A set of fundamental movements, mainly defense and attack, set in a logical sequence against one or more imaginary opponents.
Why are there 24 patterns?
Major General Choi Hong Hi compared the life of a man with a day in the life of the earth, and believed that some people should strive to bequeath a good spiritual legacy to coming generations, and in doing so gain immortality. Therefore, if we can leave something behind for the welfare of mankind, maybe it will be the most important thing to happen in our lives.
Why do we perform patterns?
To learn sparring techniques, stances, correct facing, improve facing, improve posture, focus movements, body shifting, breath control, muscle toning, learn to relax and tense muscles at the correct time and practice other techniques that are not possible in other areas of training.
Why do we learn the meanings of patterns?
Pattern interpretations are derived from people and events in Korean history, and show one or more of the tenets to give us inspiration.
Why do we kihap?
Correct breath control will not only improve one’s stamina and speed, but will also focus the power of a technique. A sharp exhaling of breath during movement, with a sudden stop on impact of technique tenses the abdomen and maximises power and effort of delivery.
