Pattern recognition Flashcards

1
Q

What is pattern recognition?

A

The body detecting pathogens by looking for patterns and signs that show what pathogen they are

The recognition of pathogens

Q

What patterns are recognised in pattern recognition?

A

Gram +ve and -ve

dsRNA: only present in viruses so if it is there it must from a virus

CpG motifs: bacterial DNA is unmethylated, so if it is present it must have come from bacteria

Q

Where are PRRs found?

A

In the circulation: eg. C-reactive protein

Cell associated: on the cell membrane, or in the cytosol, eg. Toll-like receptors (TLRs) found on the csm

Membrane bound: eg. Mannose receptors on macrophages, these detect fungi

Intracellular: eg. Nod-like receptors (NLRs) & RLRs which detect dsRNA
