Short Field Landing Procedure

(Power and Airspeed?)

A

Power: Idle

Airspeed: 70 MPH

  • Enter turn to base when touchdown point is 30 degrees off your shoulder
  • Position the airplane on final so that a slip is needed to descend
  • Drive the aim point
  • Transition to sideslip orientation and align with the centerline
  • Smoothly raise the pitch to a 3-point landing while barely off the ground
  • Touch upwind wheel first
  • Wait for downwind wheel to settle
  • Pin the tail to the runway
  • Apply full brakes
  • Hold in full crosswind correction

Soft Field Landing Procedure

(Power and Airspeed?)

A

Power: 1,500 RPM

Airspeed: 75 MPH

  • Full pattern using crosswind approach
  • Drive the aim point
  • Flare just above the runway to a 3-point attitude
  • When the aircraft starts to settle, add just a touch of power
  • Touch upwind wheel first
  • Let the downwind wheel settle
  • Pin the tail
  • Hold in full crosswind aileron correction

Wheel Landing Procedure

(Power and Airspeed?)

A

Power: 1,500 RPM

Airspeed: 75 MPH

  • Transition to a side slip when on short final
  • Align with the centerline of the runway
  • Transition to level flight attitude when just above the runway
  • Let the upwind main wheel touch first and hold it there
  • Allow the downwind wheel to touch on it’s own
  • Allow the tailwheel to touch down on it’s own
  • Keep applying full crosswind aileron correction
  • Pull control stick full aft after tailwheel is down
  • Brake only once the tailwheel is being held down
