Novice; nursing students
Nurses in this stage have gained some experience and can now recognize common patterns. They start to form principles to guide their practice. They are still learning to prioritize and manage competing demands. Are capable of performing some tasks independently but still need guidance for more complex situations.

Advanced Beginner; new grads in their first jobs, have knowledge but not enough experience
These nurses have acquired enough experience to be efficient in their practice. They can manage multiple aspects of patient care simultaneously. They are able to make clinical judgments based on their understanding of patient needs and can handle routine patient care with confidence. Also have the ability to recognize when a situation deviates from the norm and can take appropriate action. 2-3 years in the same area. Lack the speed and flexibility but have some mastery and can rely on advance planning and organizational skills. Recognize patterns and nature of clinical situations more quickly and accurately.
Competent
Nurses are capable of seeing situations as whole rather than parts. These nurses learn from experience what events typically occur and are able to modify plans in response to different events.
3-5 years in the same area
Proficient
These nurses have a wealth of experience and can quickly and accurately assess complex situations. They intuitively grasp patient needs and can make decisions without consciously analyzing the situation. These nurses often serve as mentors and resources for less experienced nurses. Their expertise is based on a deep understanding of both the theoretical and practical aspects of nursing. Nurses with 5 years or more experience in the same area are adept at recognizing demands, resources, and achieving goals in situations.
