Patient Teaching, Learning styles, Teacher/Learner relationships Flashcards
Nursing Process and teaching process
Nursing process
- assessment
- nursing diagnosis
- planning
- implement
- evaluate
Teaching Process
- learning needs
- educational diagnosis
- prepare teaching plan
- implement
- evaluate
Types of Teaching
Informal
- through general interaction
- purposeful communication
- definite/immediate goal
- asking/answering questions
- Role model
Formal
- planned in advance
- set time and place
Teaching Process
Assess learning needs
-readiness, motivation, ability, learning environment
Educational diagnosis
-based on 3 domains of learning
Prepare teaching plain:
- establish learning objective
- select content;select teaching strategies
Evaluate/modify
Learning Needs: Column 2
Crucial to determine “content”
Content based on what the pt needs
Prioritize:
Need to know ->protection, safety, well-being
Nice to know ->comfort and convenience
Educational Diagnosis
Determining learning needs Prioritize Logical sequence -knowledge deficit -ineffective coping -self care deficit -anxiety -potential for injury -ineffective family management of therapeutic regimen
Learning Goal/Objective: Column 3
Who=mother does=demonstrates what=the steps of the baby bath how=by doing the bath when before discharge
Mother will demonstrate the steps of a baby bath before discharge
Plan/Implementation : Column 4
Select strategies that best suit:
Learning objective/goal and domain content patient learning style and ability teacher strengths reality of the learning situation
Evaluation and Modification
Did pt achieve the goal?
Measure achievement by: return demonstration, discussion, observation, role play
Learning Styles
Visual
-if i see it, i learn it
Auditory
-if i hear it, i learn it
Kinesthetic
-if i do it, i learn it
Cognitive learning styles (kolb)
Accommodators - dynamics (sensors, feelers, doers)
Divergers - imaginative (sensors, feelers, watchers)
Assimilators- Analytical ( thinkers and watcher)
Convergers - common sense (thinkers and doer)
What is Empowerment
the process of recognizing, promoting, and enhancing people’s abilities to meet their own learning needs, solve their own problems and mobilize necessary resources to take control of their lives
What is advocacy
The fact of informing and supporting a person so they can make the best decisions for themselves
Using skills of teacher, counsellor and leader to protect and support a patient’s right
Informing: patient rights, relevant necessary information, ensure patient understands information, provide objective information, understand consequences of their choices
Supporting: reassure that it is their decision to make, remind others of patient’s rights, have the right to make “wrong” decision
Responsibility
A nurse, by entering the profession, voluntarily commits to and assumes professional responsibilities, duties, and rights that are set out by the profession
Reliability and dependability
Accountability
Being able to accept the responsibility or to account for one’s actions and refers to being answerable to someone for something one has done
Barriers to Teacher/learner relationship
Time, prioritization, confidence, knowledge base, teacher/learner interaction
