patient teaching Flashcards
explain the difference between formal and informal teaching
INFORMAL: through interactions, spontaneous, in response to definite/immediate goal, asking/answering questions, role modeling and demonstrating
FORMAL: planned in advance, set time and place.
ex lectures.
What is the nurses role in patient teaching?
1) gather information
2) gain information
3) build relationship
4) recognize teachable moment and teach to goal of achieving optimal health
What are some basic principles of teaching?
- individualize material, speed, goals
- simple -> complex
- concrete -> abstract
- familiar -> new
- degree of anxiety
- use several senses
- review
- repetition
- review and summarize
- positive feedback and encouragement
Compare the nursing process to the teaching process
Nursing process:
- assessment (broader)
- develop nursing diagnosis
- planning
- implement
- evaluate
Teaching process:
- learning needs
- educational diagnosis
- prepare teaching plan
- implement
- evaluate
what does educational diagnoses focus on?
the three domains of learning
What does teaching plan focus on?
teaching methods
Describe the teaching process
ASSESSMENT: learning needs, readiness, motivation, ability, environment
EDUCATIONAL DIAGNOSIS: based on three domains of learning
prepare TEACHING plan:
establish learning objectives, select content and strategies
IMPLEMENT
EVALUATE (modify as needed)
what are three goals of pt teaching
maintaining and promoting health and preventing illness
restoring health
coping with impaired function
how do you prioritize learning needs?
need to know first (protection, safety, well-being)
nice to know later (comfort/convenience)
application of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs
give some examples of educational diagnoses
knowledge deficit r/t ineffective coping r/t self care deficit r/t anxiety r/t potential for injury r/t
ineffective family management of therapeutic regiment r/t
What are the 5 essential aspects of a goal/objective that must be addressed
1) who (subject)
2) does (behaviour)
3) what (condition) (info)
4) how (criteria)
5) when (time frame)
What is the acronym for nursing process goal statements? how does it apply to teaching
you want to make sure that these are met in your educational goals too
T ime frame R ealistic A achievable M measurable and specific, mutual P atient focused
What is done in the planning phase?
set strategies that best suit
- learning objective/goal and domain
- content
- pt learning style and ability
- teacher str
- reality of the learning situation
What is the question you ask during evaluation phase?
did the pt achieve the goal?
How is goal achievement measured in the evaluation phase?
demonstration
discussion
observation
role play
