what is an individuals readiness to learn?
a person’s mind-set and openness to engaging in a learning or counselling process for the purpose of adopting new behaviours
What is the teachable moment?
the moment when the learner feels that there is a need to know the information and has the capacity to learn it.
- learner recognizes need, has capacity.
What are the two aspects of readiness to learn?
EXPERIENTIAL readiness:
physiological factors, cultural factors, past experience with learning, etc
MOTIVATIONAL readiness: are they putting forth effort to learn (asking questions, pursuit)
What three things need to be examined when assessing readiness to learn?
1) Physical condition
2) Emotional state
3) Stage of adaptation
what are the 5 stages of adaptation?
1) denial (disbelief)
2) developing awareness (anger)
3) reorganization (bargaining)
4) resolution

What are the 3 types of motivators?
SOCIAL motives: need for approval
TASK mastery motives: achievement, independence driven
PHYSICAL motives: desire to improve or maintain health

Precontemplation (not aware there is a problem or not sure)
Contemplation: begin thinking about problem

What are some factors that influence one’s ability to learn?
- developmental level (child vs adult)
- intellectual status
- cultural background
- support systems
- physical capability (strengths, can they perform tasks, pain)
- emotional capability
What should be assessed regarding one’s culture?
one’s age/generational group
Briefly describe aspects of the silent generation, baby boomers, gen X, and millennial generations
Silent gen: look at past experience struggle with tech
Baby boomers: investing time and money in retirement, concerned with kids and grandchildren, good work ethic and motivated. Face to face learning is important
Gen X: want quick and easy. Will delay for leisure
Millennial: tech savy, instant gratification/response, value entertainment
