Patient Public Involvement Flashcards
Why should patients and the public be involved in blood science research?
no matter how complicated the research, or how brilliant the researcher, patients and the public always offer unique, invaluable insights. their advice when designing, implementing and evaluating research invariably make studies more effective, more credible and often more cost effective.
How does PPI aid research questions/identify processes to change?
Change your perspective/ identify a new focus – experience/symptoms/needs
Fresh ideas of processes or solutions
Fresh eyes on your ideas
A better understanding of the likely impact
Insight into your service from the patient perspective – where are the problems, what does matter to patients
Identify where money and time is wasted because they can’t /won’t follow your procedures
How does PPI help to design studies?
Helps you to identify the implications for the patients
If you need patients or samples it will help you to ensure you are likely to gain consent.
Can help you to ensure participants are more likely to stay on a study.
More likely to gain funding
More likely to pass ethics
How does PPI help with funding?
May expect patient involvement
May require results to be disseminated to a lay audience
Helps you to show impact on patients
Lay representatives sit on some funding panels
Helps you to write lay summaries
Can help to support approval for research and sharing good practice where no funding is needed
Why is PPI important for ethics?
PPI expected for some committees
Helps you identify impact on patients
Helps you identify ethical issues and solutions.
Lay representatives sit on some ethics panels
Helps you to write lay summaries
Can help to supports approval for research and sharing good practice.
How does PPI help with the design of promotional material/literature?
PPI expected for some committees
Helps you identify impact on patients
Helps you identify ethical issues and solutions.
Lay representatives sit on some ethics panels
Helps you to write lay summaries
Can help to supports approval for research and sharing good practice.
What is engagement?
Public engagement describes the myriad of ways in which the activity and benefits of higher education and research can be shared with the public. Engagement is by definition a two-way process, involving interaction and listening, with the goal of generating mutual benefit.
What are the barriers to performing PPI?
- Lack of time
- Subject is ‘too hard’ to communicate ‘properly’
- Lack of interest, (outreach subsidiary to research and university teaching)
- Lack of funding, or experience of gaining funding
Limited possibilities for training in communication and impact evaluation
Lack of measurable and externally recognised reward and recognition
ALL OF WHICH CAN BE OVERCOME
