Recumbent
A person lying in any position
Supine
A person lying on their back with their legs straight out
Prone
A person lying face down with their legs straight out
Lateral
Person or body part is on their side
Dorsal decubitus
A person lying on their back and x-ray is horizontal and parallel to the floor
Ventral decubitus
A person is lying on their stomach and the x-ray is horizontal and parallel to the floor
Lateral decubitus
A person is lying on their side and the x-ray beam is horizontal and parallel to the floor
Left anterior oblique
Person or body part is lying face down on an angle with their left side in contact with the flat surface of the table
Right anterior oblique
Person is lying face down on an angle with their right side in contact with the flat surface of the bed
Left posterior oblique
A person or body part lying face up on an angle with their left side in contact with the flat surface of the table
Right posterior oblique
A person or body part lying face up on an angle with their right side in contact with flat surface of the table
Trendelenburg
Body is supine and inclined with the head down approx 40-45 degrees
Fowlers
Body is supine and the head is elevated approx 30 degrees
Lithotomy
Body is supine, legs and hips are flexed and the legs abduct outwards away from midline
