Patient Interventions Flashcards
What is the normal breathing rate for an adult?
15-20 breaths per minute
What is the normal breathing rate for a child?
20-30 breaths per minute
What is normal oxygen saturation?
95-100%
less than 85% indicates body is not receiving enough oxygen
What is the maximum flow rate for a nasal cannula?
5L/min
Above 5L/min nasal passages may dry causing eitaxis
What is a nebulizer?
Uses oxygen to break up soluitions and suspensions into small aerosol droplets that can directly be inhaled
May also be used to humidify oxygen delivery
What is the minimum oxygen flow rate for a simple face mask?
5L/min
Should be more than 5L/min and 30-50% oxygen concentration
What is a non-rebreathing mask?
-Flow rate and O2 %
Valves prevent rebreathing of exhaled air
How does a partial rebreathing mask work?
-Flow rate and O2%
Two way valve between reservoir and facemask
First 1/3rd of exhaled breath is exhaled into reservoir bag to be inhaled on next breath
How does a venturi mask work?
Mixes oxygen with room air to deliver a precise O2%
What is the flow rate of a partial rebreathing mask?
6-10LPM
What O2 concentration is delivered through use of a partial rebreathing mask?
50-60%
What is the flow rate of a non-rebreathing mask?
10-15LPM
What is the O2 concentration delivered through a non-rebreathing mask?
80-100%
What masks are good for patients with COPD?
Venturi mask
24-60%
What is oxygen toxicity?
The average healthy patient can tolerate 50% oxygen for 24-48 hours safely
How far can an MRT suction?
Not past the larynx and must specifically be trained to do so
What kind of conditions are optimal for suction?
Aseptic conditions to prevent respiratory infection
What are enteral routes of medical administration?
Sublingual, buccal, rectal, GI administration
What precautions are there for post-op hip arthroplasty patients?
Never adduct past midline
Avoid hyperextension
Avoid internal rotation
Avoid abduction
When transferring a post-op hip arthroplasty patients what side do you roll them toward?
Roll toward unaffected side
How high should an IV bag hang?
18-24” or 45-60cm
How often should you assess IV site?
Every 30 minutes
What do you do in the event contrast is extravasated?
Explain what is suspected and what you are doing to the patient Stop the infusion immediately Remove the needle Apple cold pack and elevate arm Notify Rad/ordering physician Complete incident report
What is INR?
International normalized ratio indicates the risk of blood clot or bleeding
What eGFR is safe to inject contrast at and which is unsafe to inject at?
eGFR below 30 will not receive injection
eGFR above 60 will receive injection
Anything in between is situational
Who is at risk for contrast induced nephropathy?
Kidney disease
Diabetics
What are vital signs?
Heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, respiratory rate
What is systolic pressure?
The highest point reached during the contraction of. the left ventricle of the heart as it pumps blood into the aorta
What is diastolic pressure?
The lowest point to which the pressure drops during relaxation of the ventricle
What is the normal blood pressure range for an adult?
90-120/50-80
What is classified as hypertension?
Blood pressure over 140/90
What is bradypnea?
Slow breathing characterized by less than 12 breaths per minute
What is tachypnea?
Rapid breathing characterized by more than 20 breaths per minute
What is hypoxemia?
The level of oxygen in the arterial blood becomes inadequate to meet the patient’s physiological needs
What is the normal pulse for a healthy adult?
60-90 bpm
What is the normal pulse for a healthy child?
90-100 bpm
What is the normal pulse for a healthy infant?
120 bpm
What is tachycardia?
an abnormally rapid heart rate over 100 bpm
What is bradycardia?
an abnormally low heart rate less than 60 bpm
What is the normal temperature of a healthy patient?
37 degrees celsius
Why are cardiac conditions a contraindication for an enema?
It can cause stimulation of the vagus nerve
What is atrial fibrillation?
atria and ventricles are contracting rapidly and in an uneven pattern
What is ventricular fibrillation?
HR is not audible, no pulse, rhythm is extremely irregular
