First things to check when patient is in acute pain?
Atypical jaw pain, signs of MI and if they have exceeded dose of painkillers
What are the next things to check after atypical pain, MI or overdose?
trauma? - trauma pathway
Swelling? - swelling pathway
If pain is not in tooth, what should be done?
advise analgesia, good OH and avoid smoking
If pain in face, is there visual disturbance or temporal arteritis? Yes = emergency, no = urgent dental care
What if pain is in the mouth?
If related to orthodontic appliance, advise analgesia, chlorhexadine mouthwash and wax to sharp areas.
If related to ulcer then ulcer pathway
If no ulcer, advise analgesia and avoid stimuli
What if pain is in erupting tooth?
is it in erupting tooth?
If yes and ADULT, advise chlorhexadine, analgesia and if infections consider prescription
IF CHILD, an Analgesia, soft food and brushing after food.
Pain not in erupting tooth?
has analgesia been taken? If no, advise analgesia
If yes, has it helped?
If yes, non urgent care,
If no, urgent dental care
