What is the method for minimum-moderate assistance to move across the bed?
A
- raise patients’ knees (crook lying), lumbrical grip
- place hands on either side of the top of pelvis, ask patients to push hands down and lift bottom
- move feet in line with pelvis
- ask patient to move shoulders across; adjust pelvis if necessary

What is the method for moderate assistance to move across the bed?
A
- place hands under hollows of ankles and knees and use legs (weight shift) to pull patient’s legs towards you
- place patient’s hands over chest
- slide hands under small of back and knees (close to bottom)
- place hands under small of back and shoulders

What is the method for rolling?
A
- near arm away from bed, far arm across chest
- put far knee up, ensure knee doesn’t drop
- place hands on scapula and pelvis and use legs to pull up
To unroll: straighten lower limbs

What is the method for slide sheets?
A
- open end to the direction of movement
- roll patient either side (quarter roll) to allow slide sheet to be put under patient)
- patient arms crossed over chest
- interlock arms with other therapist and weight shift

Supine to sitting
A
- inside knee close to patient’s hip
- patient to tuck chin in and push with free arm
- outside therapist arm on plinth for support
- close hand under scapula
- one knee on bed
- support at the end in case of dizziness

Shuffling forwards to edge of bed
A
- lean patient to one side and take weight off opposite buttock and place hand under ischial tuberosity
- pull patient forward
- repeat on other side
- ensure feet are flat on floor and hands are on bed

Sit to stand (unilateral, side on)
A
- shuffle patient forward (half thighs supported)
- ensure bed is at a good height (feet just touching the ground)
- stand on patient’s weaker side
- place foot in front of patient’s foot and knee on theirs (maintain contact)
- inside arm wraps around patient and outside arm on closest clavicle
- encourage patient to lean forwards (shoulders over knees)
- ensure patient is stabilised

Sit to stand (bilateral front on)
A
- shuffle patient forwards
- patient’s arms crossed
- squat to lock patient’s knees between therapist’s own
- one arm on scap, other on iliac crest
- lean patient forward
- contact on ischial tuberosity after standing and ensure knees are still in contact with patient’s knees

Slideboard
A
- shuffle patient forward
- place transferring to should be lower
- low lean onto shoulders (ensure you can see slideboard)
- both therapists knees on either of patient’s knees and maintain
- don’t lift patient
- ensure feet are on floor and hands on either side of bed before leaving

Wheelchair (unilateral side on)
A
- ensure contact is maintained on weak knee for the whole time
- one hand (closest) on clavicle and other on iliac crest
- walk patient to bed, ensuring weak knee is supported
- feet back on bed before lowering

- support weak side with both knees
- squat low and drive upwards
- hands on scapula and once up, one hand on ischial tuberosity
