What is passive movement?
movement of a joint without muscle activity from patients
What is active-assisted movement?
produced by patient with help from therapist
What is active movement?
produced by patient’s own muscles, no assistance required
What is the evidence for passive movement?
superior healing (more rapid and complete), decrease DVT incidence, improve knee proprioception
What are the potential effects of passive movement?
- maintain/improve joint mobility
- maintain/improve muscle length
- increase circulation (venous and lymphatic return)
- decrease spasticity
- increase or inhibit pain
What are the aims of passive movement?
-joint ROM, muscle length, muscle town, decrease pain
What does passive movement prevent?
contractures, pain, DVT, oedema
What are some contraindications and precautions for passive movement? (muscular, joint, bones?)
- following tendon reconstruction
- myositis ossificans
- acute muscular spasm
- infection
- carcinoma
- acute haemoarthritis
- recent fractures
- marked osteoperosis
