Patient Education Flashcards
What is Patient Education?
A process of assisting people to learn health related behaviors so they can incorporate these behaviors into everyday life.
Examples of this: Discharge teaching and health promotion education
What is teaching?
imparting knowledge through a series of directed activities
What is learning?
Acquiring new knowledge, attitudes, behaviors and skills through an experience or an external stimulus
What is the role of the nurse with regards to patient education?
Nurse has a huge role
-legal responsibility to provide education regardless of age, gender, culture, literacy level, religion
-patient has right to education to make informed decisions
Information provided must be accurate, complete, and relevant to patient’s needs, language, and literacy
-ethical duty
*patient will remember half of information taught
What are the three purposes of patient education?
- Maintenance and Promotion of Health and Wellness Prevention (pt gets the ability to incorporate knowledge into everyday life to promote health)
- Restoration of Health
(the pt seeks info about regaining/maintaining their level of health following injury/illness) ex./ pt has cast - Coping with Impaired Functions
(the pt learns to manage permanent health alterations) ex./ osteomy, trach
Three Domains of Learning
Cognitive - understanding (ex. osteomy bag)
Affective - attitudes (ex. body image)
Psychomotor - motor skills (ex. how to change bag)
What is the cognitive domain of learning?
Occurs when an individual gains information to further develop their intellectual abilities, mental capacities, understanding, and thinking processes
Teaching method: Lecture, Q and A
What is the affective domain of learning?
Expression of feelings and emotions, and the development of values and beliefs
Teaching Method: Role Play, Discussion
What is the psychomotor domain of learning?

Teaching Method: Demonstration, Practice, Games
What is motivation to learn? (basic learning principle)
influenced by a person’s belief of the need to know something
self efficacy: a person’s perceived ability to successfully complete a task
What is readiness to learn? (basic learning principle)
willingness to engage in learning
(motivational interviewing helps patient work through decision)
if grieving, pain ability, cognitive ability, learning environment determine willingness
What is ability to learn? (basic learning principle)
influenced by developmental level, cognitive level, and physical capabilities
What is the learning environment? (basic learning principle)
factors in the physical environment where teaching takes place making learning a good or bad experience
Teaching Process is Similar to Nursing Process
Assessment Diagnosis Planning Implementation Evaluation
Assessment?
Gather data about learning needs, motivation, ability to learn, health literacy
