Patient Assessment/Management- Trauma Flashcards
What is the first step?
Takes or verbalizes appropriate PPE precautions
What are the duties of the EMS? (Broad overview)
- Appropriate PPE precautions
- Scene size-up
- Primary Survey/Resuscitation
- History Taking
- Secondary Assessment
- Reassessment
What are the roles/steps of the “Scene size-up”? (5)
- Determines the scene/situation is safe
- Determines the mechanism of injury/nature of illness
- Determines the number of patients
- Requests additional EMS assistance if necessary
- Considers stabilization of the spine
What are the roles/steps of the “Primary survey/resuscitation”? (7)
- Verbalizes general impression of the patient
- Determine responsiveness/level of consciousness
- Determines chief compliant/ apparent life-threats
- Airway
- Breathing
- Circulation
- Identifies patient priority and makes treatment/transport decision (based on calculated GCS)
During “Primary survey/resuscitation”, what is involved with the airway step? (2)
- Opens and assesses airway
- Inserts adjunct as indicated
During “Primary survey/resuscitation”, what is involved with the Breathing step? (4)
- Assess breathing
- Initiates appropriate oxygen therapy
- Assures adequate ventilation
- Manages any injury which may compromise breathing/ventilation
During “Primary survey/resuscitation”, what is involved with the Circulation step? (4)
- Checks pulse
- Assess skin (either skin color, temperature, or condition)
- Assesses for and controls major bleeding if present
- Initiates shock management (positions patient properly, conserves body heat)
What are the roles/steps of the “History Taking”? (2)
- Obtains baseline vital signs (must include BP, P, and R)
2. Attempts to obtain SAMPLE history
What are the roles/steps of the “Secondary Assessment”? (8)
- Head
- Neck
- Chest
- Abdomen/pelvis
- lower extremities
- Upper extremities
- Posterior thorax, lumbar and buttocks
- Manages secondary injuries and wounds appropriately
During “Secondary Assessment”, what is involved with the Head step? (3)
- Inspects and palpates scalp and ears
- Assesses eyes
- Inspects mouth, nose, and assesses facial area
During “Secondary Assessment”, what is involved with the Neck step? (3)
- Checks Position of trachea
- Checks jugular veins
- Palpates cervical spine
During “Secondary Assessment”, what is involved with the Chest step? (3)
- Inspects chest
- Palpates chest
- Auscultates chest
During “Secondary Assessment”, what is involved with the Abdomen/pelvis step? (3)
- Inspects and palpates abdomen
- Assesses Pelvis
- Verbalizes assessment of genitalia/perineum as needed
During “Secondary Assessment”, what is involved with the Lower extremities step? (1)
-Inspects, palpates and assesses motor, sensory, and distal circulatory functions
During “Secondary Assessment”, what is involved with the Upper extremities step? (1)
-Inspects, palpates and assesses motor, sensory, and distal circulatory functions
