Pathophysiology of cardiovascular disease Flashcards
Cardiac disease prevalence
Neoplastic disease is no. 1 though
11% of dogs- increases with age
Findings- clinical signs = heart failure
Heart murmurs
breathlessness
coughing
Heart Failure
inadequate CO with normal BP= forward failure
Adequare CO with abrnomral filling pressure = congestive/backwards failure
can have both
How does heart failure occur
Inadequacy of blood inot arteries- initiates adaptions to restore arterial filling
1. Pump Failure
2. Vol. overload (most common in dogs)
3. Mitral Insuffiiency
4. Pressure overload
5 arrythimias
6. Diastollic failure
NC-ProBNP marker
released in response to high pressure/ too much fluid retention. (maladaption)
marker of heart disease in cats
Heart Hypertrophy
vol overload- eccentric hypertrophy.
pressure overload- concentric hypertropy
Good to begin with but can outgrow blood supply,
