Pathophysiology - CH 8 Flashcards
What is pathophysiology?
the study of the physiology of altered function in the presence of disease.
What is atrophy?
a decrease in cell size due to a loss of subcellular components, which leads to a decrease in the size of the tissue and organ.
The actual number of cells is unchanged.
What is hypertrophy?
an increase in the size of the cells due to synthesis of more subcellular components, which leads to an increase in tissue ad organ size.
What is hyperplasia?
an increase in the actual number of cells in an organ or tissue, usually resulting in an increase in the size of the organ or tissue.
What is dysplasia?
an alteration of the size, shape, and organization of cells.
What is metaplasia?
the reversible cellular adaptation in which one adult cell type is replaced by another adult cell type.
What is an example of atrophy?
a casted/immobilize limb will shrink in muscle mass because of disuse.
