Macule
Flat skin (mole, freckle)
Papule
Solid, elevated 1.0cm skin lesion (wart, mole, lichen planus)
Nodule
Solid, elevated 1-2cm skin lesion (lipoma, lymph node, erythema nodosum)
Pustule
Elevated fluid filled skin lesion (pimple, impetigo - school sores, abscess)
Tumor
Solid, uncontrolled & progressive growth of cells (neoplasm, lipoma, hemangioma)
Plaque
Flat, elevated 1.0cm or greater skin lesion (psoriasis, seborrheic keratosis)
Wheal
Temporary, localized skin elevation (insect bite, allergic reaction)
Vesicle
Small blister that is less than 1cm (shingles -herpes zoster, chickenpox - varicella)
Bulla
Large blister that is greater than 1cm in diameter
Fissure
Skin cracks (athletes foot)
Crust
Dried skin exudate (scab)
Scales
Flakes of dry skin
Erosion
Loss of the epidermis (blisters, necrosis)
Scar
Skin lesion from excess collagen production (trauma, surgery)
Atrophy
Loss of a portion of the skin which is a physiologic response to aging
