PATHOLOGY - Renal Neoplasia Flashcards
What are the main primary renal neoplasms?
Renal adenocarcinoma
Renal lymphoma
Renal sarcoma
Nephroblastoma
(T/F) Metastatic renal neoplasia is very common
FALSE. Metastatic renal neoplasia is very rare
(T/F) Benign renal neoplasia is very rare
TRUE.
What are the general clinical signs of renal neoplasia?
Weight loss
Anorexia
Haematuria
Abdominal distension
PUPD (only when in chronic renal failure)
Uraemia
Paraneoplastic disease
Which paraneoplastic syndromes can be seen due to renal neoplasia?
Polycythaemia
Hypertrophic osteopathy
How does renal neoplasia cause polycythaemia?
Renal neoplasia can cause excessive erythropoietin release which triggers erythropoiesis resulting in polycythaemia
What are some of the clinical signs of polycthaemia?
Mucous membrane congestion
Neurological signs
What is hypertrophic osteopathy?
Hypertrophic osteopathy is a diffuse periosteal proliferative condition of long bones seen secondary to renal neoplasia
What is the most common form of renal neoplasia seen in dogs?
Renal adenocarcinoma (usually unilateral)
Why do renal adenocarcinomas not typically cause uraemia?
Renal adenocarcinomas do not typically cause uraemia as beyond the tumour, the rest of the renal tissue is typically functional
How do you diagnose renal adenocarcinoma?
Ultrasound
Renal fine needle aspirate (FNA)
How do you treat renal adenocarcinoma?
Nephrectomy
What is the prognosis for a renal adenocarcinoma?
16 months with treatment
What is the most common form of renal neoplasia seen in cats?
Renal lymphoma (usually bilateral)
Why does renal lymphoma cause uraemia?
Renal lymphoma infiltrates the entire kidney resulting in renal dysfunction and uraemia
