Pathology Random Flashcards
Virchow’s triad of thrombosis
Endothelial injury
Turbulent blood flow (stasis)
Hypercoagulable blood
Platelet activation
Activated platelets are more sticky
Attract and aggregate with other platelets
Aggregate with fibrin
Fibrin in end point of coagulation cascade
Uh, this is on a slide called Technical Stuff on platelet aggregation.
Endothelium is lost, so underlying collagen exposed
Collagen binds to glycoprotein Ia (and here we lost the slide)
Likely spots to find occlusion
Branching of arteries
Just above aorta
Coronary arteries
Where does most stasis occur?
Deep venous system
Faulty valves
What can cause hypercoaguability
Increased viscosity:
Dehydration
Polycythemia
Leukaemia
Inherited disorders causing hypercoaguability
Factor V Leiden
Protein C deficiency
Protein S deficiency
Antithrombin III deficiency
Other causes of emboli in blood
Tumour emboli
Air and amniotic fluid after birth
Septic in PWID
Fat emboli after accident (bone fat into open blood vessels)
