what is choleithiasis?
gall stones
Why do gallstones form?
when there is an imbalance in the usual ratio of cholesterol to bile salts within the bile
what are pigment stones?
this is when there is excess bilirubin
why do pigment stones occur?
haemolytic anaemia, chronic infections and after ileal resections
what is cholecystitis?
inflammation of the gallbladder
what is cholangitis?
infection of the biliary tree
RUQ pain + jaundice + fever
Charcot’s triad (cholangitis)
why does acute cholecystitis occur?
gallstones blocking the cystic duct so bile cannot flow out
features of chronic cholecystitis
gallbladder wall is thickened, but not distended
Malignant Carcinoma of the bile ducts
cholangiocarcinoma (adenocarcinoma)
- associated with IBD
- mucus secreting
who gets malignant carcinoma of the gallbladder
- rare
- 70 year old women
