Pathology chapter 9 Quiz Flashcards
The endocrine system
Secretes hormones into the blood for homeostasis regulation
The pituitary gland
In the head. The Master Gland. It controls many of the other glands
Adrenal Gland
In the abdomen. The pancreas.
What is Hyperglycemia
High blood sugar
The pancreas secretes 2 hormones
Insulin and Glucagon
What organ secretes Insulin
The pancreas. Helps sugar get into cells
Negative feedback loop
A process in which a response reduces the stimulus causing it.
What does Insulin do
Lowers blood sugar
What does Glucagon do
Raises blood sugar
What is Diabetes
High blood sugar
Type II Diabetes
Insulin receptor sites have developed resistance. It CAN be reversed.
S/S of Diabetes II
Frequent urination
Hunger/thirst
Weight loss
Non healing sores
Effects of type II Diabetes
Cardiovascular disease kidney disease
CI for Diabetes type II
Poor wound healing
Peripheral neuropathy - tingles, numbness
(Can’t tell if massage is too deep)
Massage REDUCES blood sugar and so does insulin causing hypoglycemia
3 questions to ask a diabetic before massage
Do you know what it feels like when your blood sugar is low?
Will you tell me if this happens while on the table?
What would you like me to do if this happens?
Hypoglycemia
Low blood sugar
Hyperthyroidism
Overproduction of thyroid hormones (T3 + T4)
S/S of Hyperthyroidism
Restless
Nervousness
Irritability
Tremors
CI of Hyperthyroidism
Indicated for release of stress with caution to local skin issues
Graves Disease
Hyperthyroidism. Autoimmune. The body attacks the thyroid gland
Hypothyroidism
Too little T3 + T4
Metabolism slows down
S/S of Hypothyroidism
Weight gain
Lethargy
Depression
Fatigue
CI of Hypothyroidism
Indicated
What is stress
Strain or tension in a structure, system or organ
Eustress
GOOD stress
Distress
HARMFUL stress
PTSD
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
Very sensitive to touch
General Adaptation Syndrome - GAS
Stress response coined by scientist Scyle during experiments with rats repeatedly punctured with needles
3 responses to stress during Scyle experiment
Ulcers
Immune dysfunction
Tissue breakdown
3 Stages of GAS
ALARM: Fight/Flight sympathetic nervous response
ADAPTATION/RESISTANCE: Acute symptoms diminish but low grade continuum of sympathetic hormones.
EXHAUSTION: If adaptation continues exhaustion sets in
Central Nervous System - CNS
The BRAIN + SPINE:
Stimulates the adrenal glands/endocrine system
Adrenal Fatigue
Cortisol = Stress Hormone
Different ways in which we deal with stress
- Highly effective: use stress as fuel for the challenge. Motivation.
- Balanced: effective and relatively stable function. Using occasional distress to appreciate situations
- Strained: frequent difficulty coping. Overwhelmed.
- Stressed out: severe difficulty in coping
