Pathologies requiring therapeutic anticoagulants Flashcards
Hypercoagulable state
Certain individuals have a higher disposition to thrombosis
risk - having an inherited or acquire thrombophilia defect, medical conditions
Forming a thrombus
Hyper-coagulable state
Increase risk of fibrin clot forming - thrombus
Can become embolus
What are anti-coagulants?
Inhibit or reduce normal functioning of the coagulation system
Intravenous/subcutaneous anticoagulants - heparins and heparin derivaties
Therapeutic use of anticoagulants
Acquired coagulopathies - atrial filtration, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism
Inherited coagulopathies - Protein C deficiency, Protein S deficiency
Incraesed risk of thrombosis
Secondary causes of coagulaopthy
Lifestyle
Chronic inflammation
Statsis
Surgery
Determination of pathological throbus
Clinical suspicion
Coagulation screen
If postiive - imaging, doppler
Therapeutic management
Balance - risk of thrombosis, risk of haemorrhage
