Pathological Terms Flashcards
What are endocrine conditions the result of?
hypersecretion or hyposecretion of one or more hormones
What is acromegaly?
pituitary abnormality, hypersecretion of the growth hormone which may result in gigantism
What is diabetes inspidus?
pituitary abnormality, hyposecretion of the antidiuretic hormone (ADH) which causes polyuria and polydipsia
What is dwarfism?
pituitary abnormality, hyposecretion of the growth hormone which causes stunted growth
What is the syndrome of inappropriate ADH?
pituitary abnormality, hypersecretion of the antidiuretic hormone (ADH) which causes excessive water to be retained, producing edema in the body
What is hyperthyroidism?
thyroid condition, also known as Graves’ disease, overactive thyroid secretions may cause exophthalmos (bulging of the eyes), a goiter may form
What is hypothyroidism?
thyroid condition, underactive thyroid secretion
What do parathyroid glands control?
calcium levels which contribute to bone growth and muscular health
What is hyperparathyroidism?
parathyroid condition, over activity of parathyroid glands, usually caused by a tumor
What is hypoparathroidism?
under activity of parathyroid glands causing low blood calcium levels, common symptom is tetany (muscle paralysis)
What is hyperadrenalism?
overactive adrenal gland secretion, results in excessive androgens, symptoms include hirsutism, and virilism
What is hirsutism?
caused by hyperadrenalism, excessive growth of dark or coarse hair in a male like pattern - face, chest, back
What is hypoadrenalism?
under secretion of adrenal glands, aka Addison’s disease
What is pancreatitis?
inflammation of the pancreas
What is hypoglycemia?
caused by hypersecretion of insulin, blood sugar levels below normal deprive body of needed glucose, can be controlled by dietary changes
