PATHOGENS & NON-PATHOGENS Flashcards
What is a pathogen?
A pathogen is a microorganism that causes disease by invading the tissues of a host.
What is a non-pathogen?
A non-pathogen is a microorganism that does not cause disease and can even provide benefits to the host, such as aiding in digestion or producing beneficial substances.
What is an opportunistic pathogen?
An opportunistic pathogen is a microorganism that does not cause disease in a healthy host but can cause illness when the host’s immune system is compromised.
What is a pathogen?
A pathogen is a microorganism that causes disease by invading tissues and disrupting normal body functions.
How do opportunistic pathogens differ from regular pathogens?
Opportunistic pathogens only cause disease when the host’s immune system is weakened or they find themselves in an abnormal location in the body.
Give an example of a non-pathogen.
Lactobacillus is a non-pathogenic bacterium used in yogurt fermentation, improving digestion but not causing harm to the body.
