1950 Internal Security Act, commonly called the McCarran Act the law required the registration of all Communist action groups, a vaguely defined catagory, it undermined civil liberties by restricting rights based on political belief rather than on specific action
How did McCarran’s anti-communist views influence his position on the Internal Security Subcommittee?
McCarran conducted public hearings similar to those being held by McCarthy, he forged a covert liason between the subcommitte and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, blames US government officials for the 1949 Communist vitory in the Chinese Civil War and pressured the Truman administration to indict Owen Lattimore (the Far Eastern expert) for perjury

Stalled efforts to censure him though the summer of 1954 but the tide had turned against him in the issue and the Senate eventually voted to condemn McCarthy for “conduct unbecoming a US senator”
