Sir Charles Lyell, (1797 – 1875). He is best known as the author of Principles of Geology, which popularized James Hutton’s concepts of uniformitarianism—the idea that the Earth was shaped by the same processes still in operation today.
Spread of lithics around England, with an origin in the North East. Showed that there was much prehistoric trade.
A skull between two layers of volcanic ash can be dated through dated the ash through Ar-Ar dating or K-Ar dating.
Tephrochronology: volcanic ash has its own signature for each eruption. In a sedimentary sequence the associated material within the ash layer can be dated, giving a date for the eruption.
Vole clock. The Vole clock is a method of dating archaeological strata using vole teeth. Investigations at sites across Europe have allowed construction of a detailed framework of how different vole species evolved over the last million years, and where and when specific species became extinct.
