Introduction Flashcards
Karnak, Valley of the Kings, Egypt. An ancient city housing a 3000 year old temple. But the Muslim villages that once covered the temple have now been cleared away, to make room for the more “interesting” or profitable archaeology. This is an example of deliberate forgetting.
Nelson’s HMS Victory + Model. The full scale ship is considered “real” while the model is fake. However, as only 10% of the original ship remains, and the rest has been reconstucted, if the model was made of wood from the original ship, it could be more authentic.
Ground Zero. An example of the idea of “The Disappeared”- bodies being obliterated due to fire or bombs, which begun in the first world war. If archaeologists excavated the 9/11 site, they would believe that no one died there.
Crop Circles and Doug and Dave. Crop circles are an example of “False Evidence”, which can mislead. But people want to believe in the mysterious, and a whole field of experts have grown out of crop circles.
Scythian Tattoos. Body modification can show a change in time - once associated with cults and polynesians, they are now commonplace. Scythian bodies with tattoos have been found in Siberia, and are over 3000 years old.
Nazca Lines, Peru. These iconic ancient patterns have spread throughout the town and on souvenirs. Hundreds are simple lines or geometric shapes; more than 70 are zoomorphicdesigns of animals such as birds, fish, llamas, jaguars, monkeys, or human figures. Other designs include phytomorphic shapes such as trees and flowers. The largest figures are over 200 m (660 ft) across. They were created between 500 BC and 500 AD
