Forming the Past Continuous
The Past Continuous is formed with the past tense of “to be” (was/were) + the base verb + -ing.
I was reading a book.

Using the Past Continuous for Actions in Progress
Use the Past Continuous to describe an action that was in progress at a specific time in the past.
At 8 PM, she was cooking dinner.

Past Continuous with Interrupted Actions
Use the Past Continuous to describe an action that was happening when another action interrupted it.
They were watching TV when the phone rang.

Form negative sentences in the Past Continuous by adding “not” after the past tense of “to be.”

Time Expressions with Past Continuous
Common time expressions used with the Past Continuous include “while,” “when,” “at that moment,” “all day,” and “all night.”
I was studying all night.

Past Continuous for Temporary Situations
Use the Past Continuous to describe temporary actions or situations in the past.
He was living in New York for a few months.

Pasta Continuous Contrast with Simple Past
Use the Past Continuous for ongoing actions and the Simple Past for completed actions that interrupt the ongoing action.
