Party Success Flashcards
Party success is driven by their Leaders
Party leaders are the most important political figures in the UK and for many they are also the face of the party, therefore providing strong and effective leadership is therefore crucial.
They must be able to communicate the parties method effectively, bring their party with them and ensure that the party is effective and has clear direction.
David Cameron, a YouGov pole showed that in 2015 Cameron was rated as a 4.6 and Jeremy Corbyn was rated a 3.5, the Polls before hand showed that the Conservatives at 34% and Labour at 33% were relatively equal on the polls, and instead the 2015 election was the first time the Torys had increased their parliamentary vote share since 1955.
Blair was seen as a relatively strong leader, with strong media presence, clear policy direction and control over his party, these may have contributed to him seeing of 4 tory leaders and winning three elections.
Party Success doesnt depend on their leaders
James Callagahn lost the 1979 election, he had generally a more likeable personality and was nicknamed ‘Sunny Jim’ and periodically led Thatcher in the Polls. 59% were disatisfied with thatcher whereas only 50% were with Jim.
