Parts Of The Heart Flashcards
Base
Upper border of the heart, left atrium and part of the right atrium
Apex
Lowest part of the heart
Formed by the inferolateral part of the left ventricle
Endocardium
Endothelial tissue that lines interior of heart chamber and valves
Epicardium
Serous layer of the pericardium, contains autonomic nerves and lymphatics.
Myocardium
Thick contractile middle layer of muscle cells, forms the bulk of the heart wall
Pericardium
Double walled connective tissue sack that surrounds the outside of the heart
Aorta
Largest artery in the body
Superior vena cava
Returns blood from the head, neck, and arms to the right atrium
Inferior vena cava
Returns blood from the lower body and viscera to the right atrium
Pulmonary arteries
Carry Deoxygenated blood from the right ventricle to the lungs
Pulmonary veins
Carry oxygenated blood from the Lungs to the left atrium
Coronary arteries
Carry oxygenated blood to the myocardium. Right and left coronary arteries arise from the ascending aorta, right after the aorta leaves the left ventricle.
Purkinje fibers
Fibers that relay electrical impulses to the muscle cells of the heart
Bundle of His
A group of fibers that initiates the AV node. Enters the interventricular septum, and splits into the right and left ventricles. Branches into Purkinje fibers
