Parts Of The Eye Flashcards
Iris
A coloured circular muscle which contracts and expands to change the size of the pupil
Pupil
Adjustable opening in the centre of the eyes iris through which lights enters
Lens
A transparent structure located behind the iris that changes shape to focus light into an image
Ciliary muscles
Muscles attached to each end of the lens that contract or relax to change the shape of the lens so it can focus light images of objects far away
Retina
Light sensitive membrane composed of a number of layers of specialised Neurons at the back of the eye
Photoreceptors
Receptor cells located at the back of the retina used to detect light
Axon
Fibre that carries information away from the cell body of a neuron
Optic nerve
The nerve that connects the eye to the brain
Blind spot
The opening on the retina through which the optic nerve exits to brain
Occipital lobe
The brain area that receives and processes visual stimuli
Cones
Photoreceptors that detect bright light. Responsible for day vision, color vision and visual acuity
Rods
Photoreceptors that detect dim light. Responsible for night vision, black and white and peripheral vision
Visual acuity
Sharpness of vision and ability to detect fine detail
Fovea
Cup shaped area in the middle of the retina containing cones
Peripheral vision
Vision at the sides of the visual field
