Depth Cues Flashcards
Convergence
Binocular: both eyes turning inwards as an object moves closer
Depth cues
Messages sent from the environment to our body and provide information to help us perceive depth or distance
Retinal disparity
Binocular: small discrepancies between an image that reaches the right eye and one that reaches the left eye
Monocular and binocular cues
Monocular: depth perception requiring information from one eye
Binocular: a group of depth cues requiring information from both eyes
Accommodation
Monocular: muscles altering the lense’s shape to enable the eye to focus on nearby objects
Pictorial cues
A group of monocular cues that create an impression of depth on a flat two dimensional surface where depth does not exist
Linear perspective
Monocular: apparent convergence of parallel lines creating the illusion of increasing distance
Relative size
Monocular: smaller retinal image of two objects is perceived as being further away and the longer retinal image of two objects is perceived as being closer
Interposition
Monocular: when one object partially blocks another and is perceived as being in front (overlap)
Texture gradient
Monocular: the surface features of an object become smaller and less detailed the more distant an object becomes
Height in the visual field
Monocular: height of objects in the visual field (above or below the horizon) acts as a depth cue so objects can be perceived as close and far away
