Parts of the digestive system Flashcards

1
Q

What is the function of the mouth

A

Breaks down the food mechanically and mixes saliva with the food. The saliva has amylase

Q

What is the function of the stomach

A

Continues mechanical and chemical digestion, churning the food with stomach acids (hydrochloric acid and enzymes).

Q

what is the function of Small Intestine?

A

This is the primary site for digestion and absorption of nutrients. It is split in to three parts duodenum, jejunum, and ileum. The last two are the main sites for absorption.

Q

What is the duodenum?

A

The first part of the small intestine. Receives bile from the liver (breaks down fats) and digestive enzymes from the pancreas (breaks down proteins, carbs, and fats)

Q

What function does the pancreas have?

A

Produces digestive enzymes (amylase, protease, and lipase) that help digest carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. It also Releases bicarbonate to neutralize stomach acid as it enters the small intestine.

16
Q

What is lactase?

A

Breaks down lactose (a sugar found in milk) into glucose and galactose. It is produced by cells in the small intestine

17
Q

What is sucrase?

A

Breaks down sucrose (table sugar) into glucose and fructose. It is produced by cell lining the small intestine

18
Q

What is maltase?

A

Breaks down maltose (a sugar found in malt and starch) into glucose. it is produced by cells in the small intestine

19
Q

What is the function of enzymes?

A

Speed up chemical reactions/metabolism in digestion.
