Parts of the cell Flashcards
What is a Nucleus? What is inside the Nucleus?
It is the control centre of the cell, and holds Chromosomes within it.
What is the Cytoplasm?
Its the watery fluid that takes up space within the cell and is what the organelles are floating in.
What is a Ribosome?
A Ribosome is a membrane system that stores and transports proteins.
What is a Cell wall?
A cell wall protects the cell and regulates the flow of substances in and out of the cell. It is unique to plant cells
What is a Vacuole? How does the vacuole differ between a plant and a animal cell?
It is where nutrients and water for the cell is stored. Pant cells only have one large vacuole, while animal cells have many small vacuoles in them.
What is a Chloroplast?
It is filled with chlorophyll, which makes it green and allows photosynthesis to take place within the cell to provide it with energy. It is unique to plant cells.
What is a Lysosome?
They break down waste within the cell, and are used to kill bacteria and any other intruder within the cell.
What is a Cell Membrane?
It controls the movement of substances in and out of the cell. It is composed of a hydrophilic and a hydrophobic layer.
What is a Mitochondria?
It produces energy for the cell using sugar and oxygen taken from the blood stream. The energy is used to keep the cell functioning and alive.
What is a Golgi Apparatus?
It stores proteins and turns them into vesicles, which are sent to the surface of the cell to be released
What is a Endoplasmic Reticulum?
It is a membrane system that stores and transportes proteins. Is can se smooth, or rough. The rough endoplasmic Reticulum can have ribosomes attached to it.
