Cell's n'stuff Flashcards
What are unique characteristics of plant and animal cells?
Plant Cells: Cell Wall, Chloroplasts, One Large Vacuole, Geometric Shape, Only Found in Plants
Animal Cells: Many Small Vacuoles, Irregular Shapes, Only Found in Aniamls
What is Osmosis?
The diffusion of water through a semipermeable membrane
What is Diffusion?
The movement of Molecules from an area of high to low concentration
What is a 1. Isotonic Solution 2. Hypertonic Solution 3. Hypotonic Solution
Isotonic Solution: The cell maintains its size and shape, and is perfectly balanced with the environment
Hypertonic Solution: There is too much solute in the cell and it will shrink to balance its solute level with the environment.
Hypotonic Solution: There is not enough solute in the cell and will absorb more to have a more balanced level with its enviroment
What is concentration gradient?
A difference in concentration fo a substance between two areas
What is the cell theory?
- Cells are the basic unit of life
- All cells come from pre-existing cells
- All living things are made of cells
What are the characteristics of living things?
- They grow in size, reproduce, and can repair themselves
- All living things need energy
- All living things die
- Living things respond to change in their environment
- Living things produce waste
- Living things are made of cells
How do you determine the actual size of an object in a microscope?
Field of view / The number of copies viewed.
What is Turgor Pressure and how does it work?
It is the force that keeps a plant upright, and prevents it from wilting. The central vacuole of a plant fills up with water it absorbed due to osmosis, and the vacuole becomes filled up and large pushing against the cell walls making them stiff and straight.
What is a Theory? How is it different from a Law?
A law is something that happens, and is not provided with an explanation. A theory attempts to explain the law.
What is Homeostasis?
An equal balance of solute and solvent in the cell and in its environment
