What is Soot?

A

Luminous flames do not get enough oxygen to turn all the carbon that is being burnt into carbon dioxide. Some of this excess carbon produces soot which is a black substance.

What are the Steps to lighting a Bunsen Burner?

A

Step 1: Ensure that the rubber tube/ gas hose has no holes/cracks then connect it to the gas tap.

Step 2: Turn the collar to completely close the air hole.

Step 3: Light the match.

Step 4: Turn on the gas tap

Step 5: Hold the match to the side of the mouth of the chimney to allow for a flame to be ignited.

Step 6: Put the match out and put the burner in safety mode by turning the collar to open the air hole.
