Parts of the Brain + Function Flashcards
Cerebrum
Higher order thought, voluntary movement, language reasoning and perception
Cerebellum
Coordinated movement, balance and posture (wouldn’t be able to walk without it)
Pons (part of brainstem)
Arousal, controlling autonomic function (breathing, heart rate, digestion, blood vessel dilation ext.), relaying sensory information between the cerebrum and cerebellum, sleep
Medulla (part of brainstem)
Control of autonomic functions, relay of nerve signals between the brain and spinal cord, coordination of body movements.
Corpus Callosum
Fibres that connect the two cerebral hemispheres
Thalamus
Center of the adult brain, relay station for sensory signals
White Matter
Is the tissue in the brain composed of nerve fibers. The fibers are covered by myelin.
Grey Matter
Is the part of the brain composed mainly of neuronal cell bodies and unmyelinated axons.
