Neurons Flashcards
Soma
the body of the cell (neuron)
Dendrites
Branch from the soma and receive messages from others cells (neurons)
Axon
The nerve fibre which sends cells in one direction away from the cell body (soma)
Axon Terminals
located at the end of axons and conducts a signal to a nerve synapse. The end of the nerve
Myelinated Sheath
speeds the transmission of electrical impulses myelinated axons by insulating the axon. White fatty substance
Muscle fibres (motor neurons)
special endings that are sensitive to a particular stimuli such as heat, pressure or light
Sensory receptors (sensory neurons)
special endings that are sensitive to a particular stimuli such as heat, pressure or light
Sensory neurons (affector)
carry messages to the brain and spinal cord from cells in the sense organs (such as eyes, ears, tongue and, skin)
Motor neurons (effector)
carry messages from the CNS to effectors. Effectors are muscles or glands that translate these messages into actions
