Parts of the brain Flashcards
What parts make up the hind-brain
medulla, pons, cerebellum. oldest part of brain.
Where is the Medulla?
part of brain closest to spinal cord
What does the Medulla do?
controls heart rate, breathing, coughing, sneezing, swallowing
What does the Pons do?
Regulates states of sleep and wakefulness
Where is the Pons?
Above the medulla, in the hind-brain
What does the Cerebellum do?
controls balance and coordination
Where is the cerebellum?
In the hind-brain, behind the Pons
Reticular Formation
Network of neurons that connects the hind-brain to the thalamus in the fore-brain
What parts make up the fore-brain?
thalamus, hypothalamus, limbic system, cerebral cortex
What does the Reticular Formation do?
regulates attentional processes and states of arousal
What does the Thalamus do?
Relay station of the brain. routes info from sense receptors to processing centers in cerebral cortex. all senses but smell. It also regulates sleep and wakefulness.
What doe the Basal Gonglia do?
Regulates voluntary motion
Where is the Hypothalamus?
beneath the thalamus
What does the Hypothalamus do?
maintains homeostasis. regulates hunger/thirst, temperature, stress responses, emotions, aggression, reproductive processes
What is the Limbic System comprised of?
amygdala, hippocampus, and parts of thalamus, hypothalamus
What does the Amygdala do?
triggers fear responses
What does the Hippocampus do?
plays a role in the formation of memories
Where is the Cerebral Cortex?
outer wrinkly part of brain
What does the Cerebral Cortex do?
responsible for ability to think, create, use language, problem solve, organize, and calculate
What is the Cerebrum?
Largest mass of the fore-brain, consisting of 2 hemispheres
Where is the Cerebral cortex located?
Its the outer layer of the cerebrum
What Lobes are part of the Cerebral cortex?
occipital, frontal, parietal, temporal
What is the Corpus Callosum?
A thick bundle of nerves that connects the two hemispheres of he cerebrum
What does the Corpus Callosum do?
Lets the hemispheres of the brain communicate and share information
What do the Occipital Lobes do?
Lobes in charge of proccessing visual stimuli
Where are the Occipital Lobes located?
Back of the head
Where are the Frontal Lobes?
on the front top of the brain, behind forehead.
What are the Frontal Lobes responsible for?
executive processes like planning, executing plans, prioritizing, long term thinking, and decision making. Processes emotions, and controls impulses
Where are the Parietal Lobes?
top of brain between frontal and occipital lobes
What cotrex is located in the Parietal Lobes?
Somatosensory
what do the Parietal lobes do?
processes sensory info like hot/cold, pressure, touch and pain. It also is in charge of knowing the position of your body
Where are the Temporal Lobes located?
Above the ears, below and behind frontal lobes
What do the Temporal Lobes do?
Processes auditory stimuli
What are Mirror Neurons
Neurons that fire sympathetically. Both when you do an action, and when you see the same action.
What are Association Areas?
Areas that piece together information from different lobes, such as using different sensory information to form a perception, solve a problem, etc
Where is the Motor Cortex?
In the Frontal Lobe
What does the Motor Cortex do?
controls voluntary movements
